Five Minute Math: Bite-sized Math Activities for Every Family

Today’s Activity: Measure and Compare

If your children are anything like mine, they love using “adult” tools. The tape measure is a favorite in my household… so let’s leverage that interest into some easy math learning!

How to do it:

Grab a tape measure (or other measuring device, such as a yard stick or ruler) and encourage your child to measure different objects in your home. Encourage “good” measuring techniques, such as starting at the bottom of the object and reading the number at the top. This activity is a great opportunity for mathematical observation and conversation- how do we measure small things versus large things? How does the size of different object compare? The options are endless!

Older children can create a list of items and there measurements and organize the measurements (maybe from smallest to largest or grouping similar things together to compare). They can also try to combine the heights of smaller items to make the height of a large item (how many spoons would it take to make the height of a chair?).

Younger children may enjoy exploring different methods of measuring. They could use a tape measure to measure in inches and a ruler to measure in centimeters. Which tool works best for each object? Is there a “rule” they can create for measuring objects?

Small Moments Add up to Big Learning

Doing small, real-life math activities with our children is a great way to inspire a positive attitude toward math. When children see the value in math and know that those around them also see that value, they are more likely to persevere when things get tough. Taking steps to inspire math confidence in your child is an amazing gift- wonderful work taking these first steps!
