Five Minute Math- Water Play and Measurement

A happy child having fun in a pool

Here in Oregon, our weather is heating up- which makes it the perfect time for some water play! In this edition of “Five Minute Math”, we explore measuring and comparing liquids (while also practice the fine motor pouring). This post contains affiliate links to some of my favorite materials- I receive a small commission (at no extra cost to you) with each link purchase.

You will need:

How to do it:

  1. To start, select two or three different measuring tools (for example, a small liquid measuring cup, a tablespoon, and a graduated cylinder). Show your child how to fill each one and read the amount (don’t forget to use the “units”- cups, millimeters, etc)
  2. Allow your child to play and explore. You can provide commentary to draw their attention to the different quantities (“Oh, you poured half a cup of water into that measuring cup!). Highlighting the connection between the amount of water in each container and the measurement is the goal

For older children:

  1. Show your child how to measure the same amount using different measurements. First, measure out 1/2 cup using the liquid measuring cup. Read the amount, then say, “I wonder how many milliliters this is…”.
  2. Pour the 1/2 cup of water into a graduated cylinder and read the amount. “Oh, it looks like 1/2 cup is the same as [about] 118 millimeters.”
  3. Encourage your child to pour and compare the same amount of water using different measurements. If your child is interested, they can record their findings on a piece of paper and look for patterns.
